CHILD HEALTH: DIASPORA’S CONTRIBUTION IN MEDICO-SOCIAL CARE

INTRODUCTION

Scientific studies have shown that a good health system, based on prevention and early intervention, saves lives. Most African governments, not having the will to invest in health in particular, weaken the lives of their populations.
Africa Health Innovations (AHI) was created in that context . It is a Not For Profit Oganization formed by colleagues and friends to implement innovative strategies to solve broad health problems that affect the well-being of Africans on the continent.
It aims to improve the health, health system and well-being of the communities served in Africa by facilitating access to innovative preventive care, with a special focus on children’s health.
African countries are facing the nagging public health problem. The continent devotes the least resources to health care, research and prevention services. This naturally affects populations in terms of life expectancy ( reduced).
Africans are under constant pressure and experience preventable health disasters that are not being addressed urgently due to extreme poverty. As African countries lack the technological and financial means to promote and protect the health of their citizens. Families are forced to witness the slow and painful loss of their own due to poor healthcare.

CONTEXT

Living in the diaspora far from the land and willing to manage a family established in Senegal is an additional pressure on the individual. Even if his family medico-social care (back home) is one of his priorities, it goes with difficulties related to the proper information, timing and objective assessment.

OBJECTIFS

A group of professional met to develop a project with the goal to save lives.
This project in its various stages helps also to better medical care for families in Senegal by offering them a better management system, by particularly strengthening an essential pediatric practice in Senegal (the Albert Royer Hospital) in connecting them with others pediatriccs’ hospital in the US..

CONFERENCE

Involvement refers to the idea of presence and taking action in a given situation. As mentioned above, most emigrants living far from the homeland try to take proper care of their families.
The right “timing” to deal with urgent matters , especially on a medical decision may be lacking. This delay in “medical decision-making” is due to a lack of concrete elements of assessment that can help to speed up the medical decision. On the other hand, the socio-cultural architecture of Senegal is not in favor of rapid medical decision-making: the husband or father (emigrant) who has the authority of the decision makes it according to his own assessment (availability, mood, beliefs, myths etc.). A simple thing like, a time difference between the residing country of the emigrant and the homeland (where his family lives) can delay medical decisions.
Raising awareness of the importance of a rapid decision making on a medical care could save lives and/or avoid critical health situations or death.
Illegal prescriptions is a serious problem in Africa. Taking medication without a prescription, ignoring all the rules of medical safety is often noted among emigrants returning to Senegal. This so-called “self-medication” practice can cause enormous medical damages. The need to educate the community on the safety of medications needs to be addressed immediately through health awarness : having doctors and/or pharmacists to educate .
Taking medicines from Europe or America with the same molecules as those marketed in Senegal does not protect against possible health risks that can be fatal.
Therefore we will plan an international conference in New York . The following topics will be discussed with the North American senegalese diaspora :
 Delay in medical decision-making with the family of the diaspora living in Senegal,
 Self-medication in the diaspora family living in Senegal ,
 Pediatric care and surgery,
 Childern with HIV.

RESULTATS ATTENDUS

Un impact positif réel sur la santé des membres de la famille de nos compatriotes émigrés sera un résultat de l’évènement. Nous espérons une amélioration (rapidité) dans les prises de décision de la diaspora sur leurs familles au Sénégal.

Dans un cadre plus global, la mise en relation entre l’hôpital d’enfants Albert Royer de Dakar et un hôpital pour enfants de New York sera fructueux en termes d’échanges d’expérience et d’expertise. Les résultats qui découleront de cette mise en relations peuvent être multiples et multiformes.
Enfin une difficulté majeure des émigres relative à la gestion, conseil et orientation de leurs patients sera résorbée, grâce à la Carte Sanitaire Diaspora
(CSD).

VENUE AND DATE

Our event is scheduled for May 28, 2022 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square Hotel. This 4.5 star hotel is in the heart of Manhattan, on Broadway. In addition to its proximity to the city’s most luxurious restaurants and popular theaters, this modern hotel has all the logistics required for such an event. The assigned space will accomodate our guests, speakers as well as the general public.

CONCLUSION

Africa Health Innovations is counting on the participation of Albert Royer Hospital to celebrate its decade by organizing several medical forums in the United States. This will certainly benefit Senegalese people residing in the United States and their families back in their home country. We recognize that Albert Royer Hospital has done so much for children in Senegal and want to say thank you.
